Jenny of Cedarwood Ceramics
Have you ever just seen a handmade artisan ceramic mug that stopped you in your tracks? I’ve been a huge mug collector over the years and have always admired the craft and what potters create! There’s something about a handmade mug that makes whatever you’re drinking out of it taste even better! Maybe its the gorgeous clay, the beautiful glaze, or simply the amount of love you feel in each piece.
My guest on this week’s “How I Built My Maker Biz” was Jenny of Cedarwood Ceramics. I’d been following Jenny for about two years now on Instagram and have been lucky enough to snag two of her beautiful creations! Jenny hails from British Columbia and does artisanal small batch pottery with beautiful hand-carved designs. Her work mirrors the beautiful nature around her and is truly inspirational.
After taking a ceramics class in 2016, Jenny was hooked. While still in University, she began selling her goods at local markets and shops and when she graduated, decided to dive headfirst into her business! Aside from nature, Jenny’s creations are also inspired by henna design and her background doing henna. She was also always drawn to the earthy and speckled clays and knew she needed to incorporate those elements into her products.
In two short years, Cedarwood Ceramics is now very popular. Jenny sells her products on Etsy in small batches and also at local markets. Due to COVID-19, she’s only been selling online and her items also sell out very quickly! She attributes her amazing success and so growth to developing a local and personal fanbase selling in person prior to taking her business online.
Her biggest tip to someone just starting out on their maker journey:
“Just keep moving forward, even if something doesn’t work out, you can figure out a new way to find success. There will be a lot of bumps, but try not to take things too personally. Even if something bad happens, don’t take a bunch of steps back and get too discouraged. Use it to keep moving forward and grow.”
